The present paper argues that this is not the only difference between the two languages with respect to nominative Case checking and that there is also a difference concerning its optionality/obligatoriness. Through the discussion of the sentential subject construction, the ECM construction and so on, it is shown that nominative Case checking is obligatory in English. And the examination of Japanese ECM construction reveals that the checking is optional in Japanese. Case alternation possibilities in the dative construction seem to tell otherwise and constitute counter evidence. But this is not problematic at all.
