In this study, questionnaires concerning portfolios were administered to 275 elementary school teachers who attended three seminars given by the prefectural educational professional training center of Chiba in December, 2002. The seminars were classified according to teachers' teaching experiences, such as one year, five years or ten years. The results revealed that: 1) Elementary school teachers evaluated portfolios to be effective for both integrated studies and teaching other various subjects; but 2) Elementary school teachers did not seem to have enough knowledge about crucial characteristics which can make portfolios successful.
