Eighty-five children from one kindergarten in Niigata participated in this project. They did not have any special arithmetic instruction at the kindergarten. They were asked names of thirteen kinds of numerical characters after been shown commercial number cards as teaching material for young children. The data obtained from these tasks were collected twice every school year for three years, and thus amount to six samples as a whole.
