If the locative phrase, PP, is analyzed as occupying the subject position, [Spec,T], its topic properties cannot be explained. If it is analyzed as appearing in a topic position, on the other hand, its subject properties do not follow. This paper shows in the framework of Chomsky's (1995) Minimalist Program that the subject position of the LI construction is occupied by an empty DP which receives a directional θ-role from the verb and behaves like there in that it contains neither Case nor φ-features but can be attracted by the EPP feature of T. PP is inserted into the outer Spec of T as a topic, which functions as an antecedent to the empty category.
