| 内容記述 | 浜善光寺とも呼ばれている十念寺は，正式には信州善光寺大本願別院不捨山光明院十念寺と称し，新潟県上越市五智二丁目に位置する浄土宗の古刹である。1938年（昭和13年）の火災で本尊と一部を除いて全焼して以来，53年間仮御堂をもって寺跡が継承されてきたが，1991年（平成3年）に本堂が再建されることになった。これに際して本堂を，上越在住の人々の協力により襖絵，天井画，壁画等で飾る計画がなされた。筆者は住職杉山信正氏より三曲一双の形式を踏えた壁画『地獄・極楽絵図』を委嘱されて制作に従事した。制作にあたっては，経典に即した伝統的な地獄・極楽の表現のみにとらわれず，新しい現代的視点に立脚して構想しようと試みた。本稿は構想から完成までの日本画による十念寺本堂の壁画制作過程について述べたものである。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | Junen-ji, which is called Hama Zenko-ji, has a long history as a Johdo-sects temple. This temple is located at 2-chome, Gochi, Joetsu-shi, Niigata-ken. For fifty-three years, this temple has been kept as a temporary hall, because it was entirely destroyed by fire in 1938. In 1991, the committee decided to rebuild the main temple, and the people of this city cooperated to decorate it with pictures of Husuma-e, Tenjou-ga, Heki-ga). I was asked to make the monumental mural pictures which titles are "the Hell (Jigoku) " and "the Heaven (Gokuraku) " by the chief priest of Junen-ji. To paint this scene, I attempted to express not only Hell and Heaven in the old Buddist scriptures but also the images standing on a modern idea. | |||||||||||
