| 内容記述 | 英語には，統語構造上，文の焦点が特定の位置に生じる構文がある。it分裂文は，学校文法でもit-thatの強調構文として知られているように，主節(it節)と従属節(that節)の複文構造から成り，焦点が主節のbe動詞の後の位置に固定した構文である。この焦点位置に生起できるのは，典型的には名詞句と前置詞句であるとされているが，これら以外の文法項目も焦点として生じることができることが知られている。本稿は，このうちQuirk et al.(1985)における付加詞，及び下接詞をとりあげ，その焦点位置での生起可能性について，中右(1994)のモダリティ理論の枠組みによって一般化を試みるものである。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | This article is concerned with the adverbials in the focus position of a cleft sentence. The main points argued are: (i) why frequency adjuncts as well as means, instruments, and agent adjuncts can readily become the focus of a cleft sentence, and (ii) why acceptability of manner adjuncts, which cannot be the focus of a cleft sentence, is increased if they are modified or if the focal clause is interrogative or negative. We will investigate these issues in the framework of Nakau's (1994) theory of modality and cognitive shift, and elucidate the semantic properties of adverbials appearing in the focus of a cleft sentence. | |||||||||||
