| 内容記述 | 中学校の英語の授業では次のような構文の書き換え練習が行われている．（a）John gave the book to Bill．…〉John gave Bill the book．（b）John gave Bill the book．…〉John gave the book to Bill．これは，いわゆる英語の「五文型」のうちの第三文型と第四文型の書き換え練習である．しかし，このような機械的な書き換え練習はどのような意義があるのか，あるいは「ジョンはビルにその本をあげた」という同じ命題内容を表すのに，なぜ二通りの言い方があるのか等々の疑問が生じてくる．この二つの文型は，上例のように単独で用いられる場合には違いが分かりにくいが，話し手と聞き手が登場する談話（discourse）の場面を考慮すると，その道いははっきりと現れてくる．すなわち，John gave the book to Bi11．の文では，話し手が最も伝えたいのはto Billの部分で，これをより重要な情報，すなわち新情報として聞き手に伝えているのに対し，John gave Bill the book．の文では，the bookを新情報として伝えている，という違いがある．本稿では，話し手と聞き手の立場から英語の談話を分析し，情報構造に関わる受動文の機能を明らかにする． | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | The purpose of this study is to investigate the functional characteristics of passive constructions in discourse from the perspective of information structure. I have introduced the notions of old/new information and the principle of information structure developed in Halliday (1985), Inoue (1982), Kuno (1987), and Prince (1981). Then, I have pointed out that the English passive is a language internal device, which is intentionally used by the speaker/writer to adjust the flow of information in accordance with the principle of information structure. I have further demonstrated that the main functions of the passives are i ) to put thematic elements in the subject position, ii) to avoid manifesting agents, iii) to present agents as new information, and iv) to contribute topic continuity in discourse. | |||||||||||
